Audio file format developed after a joint venture between Electronic Arts and Apple during the late ‘80s.

The AIF file format is based on a coding method similar to the one used for the IFF format developed by EA for their Amiga Systems. The Audio Interchange Format is currently a standard for Macintosh computers.

AIF files store data as uncompressed pulse code modulation offering high audio quality similar to other files used by expert audio editors. However, the “lossless” characteristic takes its toll on file size, AIF files being around 10 megabytes larger per minute of recording. However, their size can be reduced with audio codecs developed by Apple.
