AVI is a legacy video container format developed by Microsoft in 1992 and introduced with Windows 3.1. Because it’s such an old format, it’s missing a lot of features that are now considered standard.

Limitations of AVI files include no support for specific variable bitrates and no access to video frames beyond the current frame. The latter is needed for any compression technique and while there are ways to work around this, they can cause playback issues.

Even though AVI files store uncompressed video data, it can be encoded with multiple codecs. Besides video footage, AVI files can also store metadata for tagging. This is both good and bad as it allows encoding with different aspect ratios. AVI files can be opened with a large number of media players but the codec used for the video compression must also be installed on the computer. Programs which determine what codec was used are available online for free.
