The DDS file format was developed by Microsoft for storing images created using the S3TC lossy compression algorithm.

DDS files are used in conjunction with the DirectX set of functions and standards for saving environments and textures. Direct Draw Surface is essentially a raster image format and can store both uncompressed and compressed pixels.

The S3 texture compression algorithm can be decompressed by any Graphic Processing Unit including the ones used by gaming consoles. This is one of the reasons why DDS files are used for storing both images and video game unit models.
