Document created by Microsoft Word (versions 2007 onwards), a word processing application which is part of Microsoft Office.

The .DOCX file format is based on Microsoft's Open XML standard and is actually a single compressed archive (in .zip format) with different types of files within, such as a plain-text file for the document's text content plus any images that are embedded in the document.

These files are stored within three different folders named "_rels", "word" and "docProps" and can be extracted separately from the archive using a data compression application. The XML documents can be viewed and edited with any text editor.

Older versions of Word used the .DOC file format.
