Files with the KEYCHAIN extension are created with Apple Keychain Access, a default Mac OS X application that’s used for saving and using authentication data.

Keychain files are essentially generic DL/CPS data containers which store encrypted sets of authentication information that contain private keys, certificates and passwords. They’re used for automatic authentication after the user has enabled authentication information saving. Usage includes FTP files, Websites, Wi-Fi networks and SSH accounts.

It is important to remember that KEYCHAIN files are simple containers and cannot be used, viewed or edited without Keychain Access.
