Used by various makes and models of digital camcorders to save video data. These video files store both the video and audio recorded through a digital camera.

The file extension was first used by JVC, however other camcorder manufactures such as Panasonic and Canon have since started to use the .MOD file extension with their camcorders.

These .MOD video files are often accompanied by an .MOI file that stores the video's time-stamp information (when the video was created, length of movie etc).

Video files that use the extension .MOD are recorded in standard definition, whereas high-definition video files use the .TOD extension.

The actual format used by .MOD files is the "MPEG-2 program stream", which are normally given the .MPG or .MPEG extension. The high-definition .TOD files store the video data in the "extended MPEG-2 transport stream", again these files are normally given a file extension of .M2TS or .M2T.

Audio data within both .MOD and .TOD files use "MPEG-1 Audio Layer II" compression.
