Category:Video Files
Popularity: (Common)
Originally created by the Moving Picture Experts Group (hence the .MPEG extension), files with the .MPEG extension are used to store video and audio data.

This video and audio data is compressed with either the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 algorithm, meaning a media player that supports these compressions is required to play the file. However, due to the popularity of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 compression, most modern media players will support it.

Both the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 compression algorithm are known as 'lossy', meaning the final video/audio quality is slightly lower than that of the original. However, it should be noted that the resulting video/audio is often considerably lower than that of the original raw video/audio data.

Although the .MPEG extension is sometimes used, it is more common for the extension to be .MPG - the format of both is exactly the same.
