Created by Microsoft in 1987, the Rich Text File format is one of the earliest text document formats. Although it was initially developed as a proprietary text format, it soon became the cross-platform solution of choice for transferring documents.

It was called a "rich" text file format because it offered a wide variety of formatting options which were mostly unavailable at the time. This includes custom tab sizes, bullets and numbering, custom line spacing and more. It even offered support for image integration.

RTF files are very common nowadays and regarded as simple text files. They can be opened with any Office Suite and almost any basic text editor.
