Files with the TEX extension are documents created using the LaTeX typesetting  system. Used mostly for academic and science purposes, LaTeX is not a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) system. Instead, it focuses on content and it uses its very own markup language for defining and formatting data.

TEX documents are used for creating large science documents such as technical reports, scientific slide presentations, journal articles, books, etc. The LaTeX system offers enhanced support for large documents through sectioning, cross-referencing, typesetting of advanced mathematical formulas and Metafont/PostScript Integration.

Essentially, TEX documents are simple ASCII files and can be opened and edited with any basic text editor. However, for proper document display the LaTeX markup language has to be parsed with dedicated applications.
